Don’t Be So Sad, You’re Going to Play Guitar Blues, Not Live Them
The age old question: do you really need to suffer in order to play good guitar blues? Lord, I hope not, because I really want to play guitar blues, and Iím really looking forward to playing them, but I’d really rather not go through the whole suffering bit.
And you don’t need to have suffered through hard times to play guitar blues, although it could help. What you do need to be able to do, is tap into what your equivalent of that kind of suffering is. Pain is subjective, and you don’t need to have great tragedies occur to you to have had tragic moments in your life.
When you play guitar blues, it’s all about the emotion of the moment. You need to tap into that, even if you’ve led a charmed life. Just please, for the love of good music, don’t sing lyrics about your painful to you, but less than blues-y events you’re tapping into. No one wants to know that your greatest pain was when your parents got you a Nissan instead of a BMW for your 16th birthday. Sure, if that’s your reality, you can use the memory for the emotion, but I wouldn’t mention it to anyone else that play guitar blues. It’ll ruin your reputation.
I’m getting a bit off track (as I am wont to do) but my main point here remains the same ñ anyone can play guitar blues. You just have to be able to appreciate the emotion behind those great songs and remain true to them. You don’t need to have been raised in poverty to appreciate the genre, and now that you’re learning how to play the guitar, you want to play guitar blues.
So defend your right to do that and tap into your inner pain, and give it all your worth, and play guitar blues. Just donít ever mention that car story. To anyone. Ever. Or you may find new inspiration to play guitar blues in the beatdown you get from someone who actually went through some real suffering. So just keep it about the music and play those guitar blues, man.
