I started off with music lessons that only taught me to read tab, but I wanted to read music! My instructor started me with Arron Sherings method books and they were difficult to understand and generally were boreing. The Sageras method is easy to understand and has very nice pieces to practice and help the student to progress. Classical guitar is an excellent way to build a solid musical foundation, even if you want to play rock, blues or whatever.

If you want to learn to sight read music onto the guitar, this is probably the easiest, most enjoyable method ever written.

I’ve been a professional guitar teacher for 22 years. Every student I know who has completed this book has become a competent guitarist and a decent sight reader. All of them.

This book used to cost a small fortune in North America due to a copyright issue so it wasn’t widely distributed. Now that the copyright issue has been resolved, there is no reason not to get it. Even for advanced players, the pieces are pleasant to read through, so you will never go wrong giving it as a gift.

The Ricordi Americana edition pictured here includes solfege syllables for the 1st 36 studies, so it is useful for ear training too (the Mel Bay edition does not) The Spanish/English bilingual text is a nice touch for students learning Spanish, and provides a sense of heritage for students of Latin descent.

Sagreras Las Primeras Lecciones is on a par with other great guitar methods like Carcassi, Giuliani, Sor, and Tarrega. In 100 years, people will still be using this wonderful little book. It’s rare that something this good is this affordable.

    Muchos gracias maestro Sagreras!

    (I buy mine 10 at a time now. . . ;-)
