Is There Really Such a Thing as Free Guitar Lessons?

You’ve heard the saying “there’s no such thing as a free ride”.
Well. The same goes for free guitar lessons and it’s never really free. I’ve had quite a few friends who were in bands, and trust me, whenever they offered free guitar lessons, there was usually an ulterior motive.
Some of the time the price of free guitar lessons was something as simple as a hot meal or a place to crash after a gig, or even just the ability to then call on the lesson-getter for a favor, like a ride or help moving equipment. But the example that stands out in my mind the most is my friend Dave. I’m calling him Dave (not his real name) to protect his identity (you’ll see why in a moment.)
You see, Dave was a generous guy, always offering to give people free guitar lessons, which I thought was real nice of him, until I realized that all of the people that he was offering these free guitar lessons to had three things in common: they were all female, young, and pretty. Not much of a reach to figure out what Dave’s ulterior motive was, is it?
Even if you do have a really good friend who is willing to truly give you free guitar lessons, keep in mind that you may get exactly what you paid for. Just because someone is a good guitar player does not necessarily mean that they’ll be a good teacher. So, despite their best intentions, you may be getting free guitar lessons that will actually cost you in the end.
And you know, it’s not even necessary to try to get free guitar lessons at all. There are some great online guitar lessons programs available that will give you all the tools and books that you might need to learn to play guitar. And while they aren’t free guitar lessons, a lot of them are pretty reasonably priced, and for that small fee, you’ll be getting lessons from people who actually know how to teach people how to play guitar.
So while free guitar lessons are tempting, I’ll take good and useful and reasonably priced any day.
