Things to Keep in Mind When Learning to Play Guitar

I know, I know, you’re all excited because you’ve finally taken that step and decided that youĂre going to be learning to play guitar. I know I was excited when I too that final step and actually decided to just do it already! But before you get too carried away with your visions of becoming a rock star after learning to play guitar, you need to keep a few things in mind.

When you’re learning to play guitar, you want to go strait to the end and you want to start jamming with a band or singing along. But the reality is that you’ll need to do a lot of work by yourself before you’re good enough to do that. Most people don’t realize it, but for the beginning who is just learning to play guitar, trying to keep rhythm with other instruments, or to sing and play at the same time can actually be quite difficult.

You’ll get farther, faster, if, for the first little while when you’re learning to play guitar, you stick to you and only you playing. There will be lots of time to jam with other people once you’re solid in you basic skills, and trust me, it will go much better.

Another thing to remember when you’re leaning to play guitar is that no matter how good your learning system is, you wont learn to play guitar unless you practice. A lot. There is not a single famous guitar player out there who did not get that way by spending most of their free time playing.

Alec Van Halen, drummer in the famous band and brother to Eddie, tells stories of him leaving on a date with Eddie practicing, and coming home hours and hours later to find Eddie in the exact same position, still playing. The combination of that kind of love and skill and dedication has made him famous.

Now, I’m not saying you have to practice that much when you’re learning to play guitar, but you will definitely get out whatever you put into it. And that’s the most important thing to remember when you’re learning to play guitar.
